Social Media Detail Now Needed For US Visa Application - bbc.com |
The State Department regulations said that applicants will have to submit social media names and five years' worth of email addresses and phone numbers, the BBC reported on Saturday, June 1, 2019.
According to the State department,
"We are constantly working to find mechanisms to improve our screening processes to protect US citizens, while supporting legitimate travel to the United States."Certain diplomatic and official visa applicants will be exempt from the stringent new measures.
With the new rules, everything you say or do on social media can or will be used against you.

While this was expected for some time, I am not happy about it finally being implemented. Giving social media details to the government is an interesting step, but the opaque algorithm combing through the data and displaying a YES / NO decision will have challenges. Many people use twitter and are sarcastic at times. Algorithms are not good enough to understand the stuff and it making decisions is concerning. It is similar to algorithms deciding if you should have health insurance, or how much your car insurance premium should be. US is still the best country on the planet and every person in the US is lucky to be living in the most amazing place. So I still think this is a small price to pay to be in the best place in the world. After all, visiting or immigrating to the US is a privilege.
